On Velocipedes and Microcosms

I am excited to announce that the Microcosm/Elly Blue Publishing Kickstarter for my book, The Velocipede Races has finally begun! And let’s face it, I’m also terrified. The success of this Kickstarter is extremely important to the eventual printing and publication of my book, my baby, my first novel to be produced and published by someone other than me.

I’m planning a series of blog posts this month all about The Velocipede Races, the Kickstarter, and bicycles. This first one will answer a question several people have asked me about the production of this special edition of TVR: Why is there a Kickstarter?

To answer that question, I’ll have to tell you little bit about my publisher. I am so happy to have had the opportunity to work with Elly Blue/Microcosm on this project. They are a super-hip, independent press based in Portland, Oregon. They specialize in books and zines covering rebel cookery, punk rock, house and home for the sustainable homesteader, life stories, healthy relationships, real-world reporting, and of course BICYCLES. They are the perfect forever home for The Velocipede Races, and I love everything about their business model, from the grassroots, DIY approach to the use of crowd-funding to launch new works. They work from the heart, with true authenticity and passion in that work.

Everyone is increasingly aware that the publishing industry, on all fronts, is teetering on edges, and has been for quite a while. Traditional publishing business models need a revamp or even a complete restructuring. Indie publishing leaves writers juggling too many balls at once and has created a market flooded with unfindable and unvetted books. In a confused industry, a publisher like Elly Blue/Microcosm is doing it right. They seek out-of-the-box solutions to make publishing work. One of the ways they have done this is by concentrating on specific, relevant topics, and in doing so, they have cultivated a devoted audience who follow their publishing imprints as brands in and of themselves. I believe this is absolutely necessary for publishers looking into the future. They must step forward to become the marketing forces that can connect new books with the right audience.

By using crowd-funding (Kickstarter) to finance the initial print runs of new books, EBP also buffers some of the risks and pitfalls that are currently making traditional publishing suffer. Kickstarter supporters buy the book in a pre-order fashion, and those sales support the initial print run. In the case of The Velocipede Races, supporters at the basic level of $15 get a copy of the book. Supporters at higher levels get to select from a variety of fun, quirky, and unusual rewards. This is a great way to launch a book with a concentrated publicity drive while ensuring that the publisher won’t be paying to print a book they can’t sell. The Kickstarter itself ensures sales. It’s smart, simple, and elegant.

What all this means for me, as the author of the book, is that I have a strong motivation to get people to support that KICKSTARTER! It is the push that will birth my baby.
